Description

The City of Gresham is seeking qualified applicants to fill a vacancy as a Water Meter Technician.  As the Water Meter Technician, you will work independently, prioritizing and scheduling meter maintenance, testing meters for accuracy, exchanging older meters for new meters and troubleshooting meter reading issues. You will also learn about the Cities Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI). You will be relied upon by other staff members to be the water meter subject matter expert.

The Water Meter Technician acts as the Water Division subject matter expert in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and repair of water system meters, both large and small.  This role manages the testing and analyzes data from both programs to ensure equipment and readings are accurate. To minimize the lifecycle cost of operations, this position works to incorporate water meters into the City's asset management program.

Salary: $61,828.00 - $78,962.00 Annually

 

What you will get to do:

  • Water Meter Subject Matter Expert
    • Install new and replacement meters
    • Calibrate large and small meters to determine accuracy
    • Coordinate meter testing and repair with customers
    • Use testing equipment in the field to determine accuracy and within American Waterworks (AWWA) Standards
    • Listen to and interpret different types of sounds to detect leaks
    • Troubleshoot meter deficiencies
  • Manage the Leak Detection Program
    • Plan and conduct leak surveys
    • Use a database to determine the presence of absence of leaks
    • Use data in coordination with other staff to ensure water loss is within AWWA acceptable limits
    • Direct assigned staff to assist in the leak detection program
    • Determine placement of water loss devices including loggers and acoustical instruments
  • Water Meter Asset Management System
    • Incorporate the water meter database into Lucity
    • Develop a work order system for meter maintenance and replacement using the Lucity Asset Management system
    • Mentor and train other water staff in the tracking of the maintenance and replace using the Lucity Asset Management System
  • Act as the Water Division Point of Contact for Water Meters and Leaks
    • Respond to customer inquiries regarding meter readings, malfunctions, accuracy, leaks and repairs
    • Coordinate new meter installs with Development Services
  • Operations Public Utility Worker related duties
    • When needed, help with Water Division crew work
    • Occasionally help with other Division crew work (example: Transportation Winter Storm Events)
  • Water Division 'On-Call' Representative
    • Be included and available as the Water Division 'on-call' phone duty contact
    • Respond to after hours calls of varying water system issues
    • In the field, determine appropriate action to resolve water system issues

 

Qualities we are looking for:

  • A highly organized individual who is able to understand water meter priorities and prioritize daily work schedule accordingly.
  • Knowledge of the principles of infrastructure asset management (water, streets, sewer, etc.) and/or experience entering data into asset management software programs
  • Knowledge of how the AMI metering system works including the ability to troubleshoot non-functioning meters.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer focused
  • Ability to effectively navigate conflicts
  • Collaborative person to interact with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to collect data and enter into a spreadsheet

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree
  • One (1) to Four (4) years of progressively related experience to include general public municipality Water Operations experience, as well as public municipality Operations experience in other infrastructure areas (transportation, wastewater, stormwater, parks) that involves operation and maintenance of assets, tracking and documentation of activities.

Any combination of qualifying education, training, and/or experience that is equivalent to 3-6 years will be considered.
Required licenses and certifications:

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Confined Space certification is required
  • Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Flagger certification is required
  • Oregon or Washington Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements is required
  • Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Water Distribution Level II (required within 12 months of hire)
